Untraceable Drones Near US Military Bases: Security Risks and Detection Challenges

Untraceable drones hovering near major US military installations are raising severe security alarms and demand urgent countermeasures.

Persistent Drone Threats

Unidentified drones have continuously appeared over US military facilities since 2019, causing significant security concerns. These aerial intrusions have been recorded at notable locations like Virginia’s Langley Air Force Base and off the California coast over naval warships. The pattern of sightings has alarmed both security experts and government officials, emphasizing the need to bolster detection and response capabilities.

During the 17 days of initial drone activity, some F-22 Raptors at Langley were even relocated to other bases as a precautionary measure. Retired Gen. Mark Kelly noted the diversity in drone sizes, from handheld quadcopters to models comparable to small cars, making it challenging to categorize and counteract the threat efficiently.

Demand for Enhanced Security

Retired military officials like Gen. Gregory Guillot are emphasizing the urgency of prioritizing drone threats within national defense strategies. Gen. Glen VanHerck criticized the lack of urgency in mitigating these threats, highlighting a “capability gap” in NORAD’s radar systems, which struggle to detect low-flying drones. He further questioned the assumption that the US’s geographic positions inherently safeguard it from attacks.

“I am privy to classified briefings at the highest level. I think the Pentagon and the national security advisors are still mystified.” – Sen. Roger Wicker.

Recent government efforts to update radar systems aim to close this detection gap within approximately one year. However, security experts advocate for swift action as potential foreign espionage on sensitive military assets poses a constant threat. Sen. Roger Wicker suggested that these untraceable drones might be involved in spying activities on US military capabilities.

Eyewitness Accounts and Response

Individuals like eyewitness Jonathan Butner have captured footage of these mysterious drones, sharing evidence with authorities such as the FBI. Butner remarked that the drones were unlike any known US military craft, including Blackhawks or F-22s, reinforcing the enigmatic nature of these sightings.

“I’m very familiar with all the different types of military craft. We have Blackhawks, we have the F-22s. And these were like nothing I’ve ever seen.” – Jonathan Butner.

As the investigations continue, the persistence of these drone sightings underscores the critical need for a more responsive security framework. With the potential for intelligence leaks and compromised national defense, the government’s ability to promptly enact protective measures remains a key priority.
