FDA Recall Notice: Good & Gather Canned Cut Green Beans Due to Contamination Risks

An urgent recall from the FDA highlights potential contamination in Good & Gather’s canned cut green beans sold at Target. Nearly 200,000 cans are affected, with foreign objects posing potential health risks. Consumers across 21 states are cautioned, yet no illnesses have been reported. What steps should concerned shoppers take?

Details of the Recall

The FDA announced on February 12 that roughly 197,808 cans of Target’s Good & Gather Cut Green Beans face recall due to potential contamination from a foreign object. Known as a “Class II” recall, this classification implies the product “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences.” So far, no illnesses are linked to this ongoing recall.

Del Monte Foods, Inc., headquartered in Walnut Creek, California, manufactures the affected green beans. Distribution covers Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia, and Wisconsin. The products identified under this recall include Lot number 7AA 418507, UPC: 0 85239-11628 9, best-by date: 10/28/2026, and Size: 14.5 ounces (411 grams).

Consumer Guidance and Corporate Response

Despite the recall’s scope, Target has not yet issued specific guidance on returns or refunds for affected products. It is generally recommended that consumers discard or return the recalled beans. Retailers and Del Monte Foods have not commented on the situation. Other recent recalls due to foreign objects include products by Lean Cuisine and Stouffer’s due to “wood-like material” contamination.

“Class II” – FDA

Foreign object contamination is rare, making up just over 4% of food recalls last year, while undeclared allergens were the most common cause. The public should remain vigilant, inspecting canned goods for specified lot numbers and returning questionable items to retailers.

Enlarged Perspective on Food Safety

This recall reminds us to remain attentive to food safety notices. In addition to the Good & Gather recall, this month we also saw recalls of Trader Joe’s sparkling water, Whole Foods macaroni and cheese bites, and SeaBear Company’s seafood chowder for various reasons. With vigilant inspection and prompt action, potential health risks related to food contamination can be mitigated.

Consumers are urged to monitor for further updates, check their pantries for the affected product codes, and heed recall warnings to safeguard their health.
