Former rap mogul Damon Dash faces new legal troubles as author Edwyna Brooks sues him for allegedly hiding assets to avoid paying a $100,000 court judgment. Edwyna Brooks has launched a significant legal challenge against former rap mogul Damon Dash over concealed assets.
Legal Battle Escalates
Edwyna Brooks, an author who previously won a $300,000 copyright infringement case against Damon Dash, has filed a new lawsuit in Manhattan federal court. The suit alleges that Dash, co-founder of Roc-A-Fella Records and former partner of Jay-Z, has been hiding money in corporate entities to avoid paying a nearly $100,000 judgment.

The legal dispute stems from a failed countersuit by Dash following the initial copyright case. Brooks’ lawyer, Chris Brown, states that the debt with interest has grown to almost $100,000. The new lawsuit delves into Dash’s financial affairs, questioning his asset allocation and fiscal compliance.

Asset Shifting Allegations
Brooks’ lawsuit claims that Dash and his girlfriend, Rachel Horn, used their companies to shift liabilities and avoid paying debts. Specifically, the suit alleges that Dash moved assets from Poppington LLC to The Dash Group to evade the judgment.
“Fallen rap mogul and former Jay-Z partner Damon Dash have stashed money in a web of corporate entities to dodge paying a nearly $100,000 judgment, a new lawsuit claims.” – Edwyna Brooks.
The lawsuit further alleges a fraudulent merger between Poppington and The Dash Group to conceal assets. According to court documents, Dash reportedly received $83,333 monthly from Kanye West through Poppington, then billed West through The Dash Group after the merger.
Mounting Debts and Asset Auction
Dash’s financial troubles extend beyond this lawsuit. His stake in Rocafella Records was sold at auction for $1 million, which is insufficient to cover his debts, including over $8 million in New York tax debt. Brown, Brooks’ attorney, revealed the extent of Dash’s financial woes:
“Mr. Dash has about $10 million in personal debt.” – Chris Brown.
The original lawsuit that led to this legal tangle involved Dash marketing and selling a film based on Brooks’ book series “Mafietta” without proper authorization. Despite the auction of Dash’s Rocafella Records stake, it did not resolve the outstanding debts.
Ongoing Legal Proceedings
As the legal battle continues, Brooks and her legal team are determined to collect the judgment. Brown emphasized the necessity of the current lawsuit:
“If we had been made whole from the auction, this lawsuit would not have been necessary.” – Chris Brown.
The lawsuit claims that there is “no doubt that Poppington and TDG are related entities and engaged in a defacto merger,” suggesting a deliberate attempt to obscure assets and avoid financial obligations. As of now, representatives for Damon Dash have not responded to requests for comment on these allegations.
