MBTA Train Crash in Canton: Injuries and Delays Spotlight Crossing Dangers

A crash involving a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) commuter train and a truck on Wednesday afternoon in Canton has highlighted the perennial dangers of railway crossings. The incident caused injury and service delays and underscored the urgent need for enhanced safety measures at railway crossings.

The Incident in Canton

At 1:40 p.m., an MBTA commuter train collided with a truck at a railway crossing on the Stoughton Line. The truck was pushed down the tracks and wedged against a fence.

The train’s operating company, Keolis, has stated that the warning system was fully operational during the accident. The truck driver managed to escape unharmed, whereas a passenger on the train sustained minor injuries and was treated at a hospital.

Service Disruptions

The accident led to considerable delays on the Stoughton Line, affecting public transportation. Services resumed regular operation before 10 p.m. the same day.

Due to the incident, two trains were halted, and one train was canceled. Passengers were advised to take alternate routes, and shuttle buses were provided between Canton Center station and Stoughton to facilitate travel.

Ensuring Future Safety

In the aftermath, Canton police closed Pine Street, and its reopening time remains uncertain. The incident prompted discussions on improving safety protocols, though it was confirmed that the crossing system performed correctly.

“There is no issue with this crossing. The truck driver stopped on the tracks for unknown reasons,” said Keolis.

This incident is a stark reminder of the potential risks at railway crossings, stressing the importance of vigilance and improved safety measures to prevent future occurrences.
